Fighting Intricacies & Success Associated with IVF
Couples who
are having intricacies with becoming pregnant could find themselves in an IVF
clinic. IVF, a short form of in-vitro fertilization, is the process in which a
woman's egg is fertilized with a sperm outside of her body. This process is
often considered when natural methods for reproduction and other more common
assisted reproduction procedures are unsuccessful.
The
procedure is fairly simple. It involves monitoring of the ovulation cycle of
the woman so that the egg may be harvested and taken out when it is in its
fertile state. The egg is then placed on a shallow container, normally a petri
dish, where it is injected with sperm. Once fertilized, it is then placed back
into the uterus of the woman for the natural process of pregnancy to occur.
Other than
the fact that the egg is fertilized outside of the woman's body, in-vitro
fertilization relies on the natural methods for pregnancy. This is why even
with the help of such a medical procedure, the results are not always one
hundred percent sure. The latest information which shows the results of IVF
procedures done in 2009 shows that the success rate is less than fifty percent.
This is why an IVF clinic may use other additional techniques so that the
procedure may yield the desired results.
Success With IVF
Some of the
steps that are undergone to increase the chances for a successful pregnancy are
ovarian hyperstimulation and the egg and sperm separation. In ovarian
hyperstimulation, the ovaries are stimulated either through a long or a short
protocol. The long protocol involves a method of downregulation before a
follicle-stimulating hormone is used. The shorter protocol removes this process
and moves straight to the use of fertility medications so that the ovaries may
develop multiple follicles.
The result is to produce more than one fertile egg
so that the chances of pregnancy may be higher. As for the egg and sperm
separation method, the chosen eggs are stripped of the cells that surround
them. There is also an oocyte selection procedure which makes sure that the
selected egg is the one that has the optimal chances of becoming fertilized. In
the same way, the sperm is also prepared with the removal of inactive cells and
fluids through what is known as sperm washing.
Consequences
Of IVF
The results
of an in-vitro fertilization procedure are also affected by other factors such
as the quality of the eggs, the quality of the sperm, the general health of the
woman, and the skills and competences of the professionals who are involved in
the procedure. It is also helpful to get information about the options for
clinics before one is chosen. Some clinics may have higher rates of success
than others due to more advanced equipment or better IVF teams. People who are
having problems with getting pregnant could find themselves in an IVF clinic.
